Mountain Biking Fundamentals

Ideal for beginners new to mountain biking, this course introduces you to the fundamentals of cycling off-road. The day will incorporate a ride of a moderate distance taking in some classic Peak District mountain biking trails covering these objectives:

  • Off road ride of around 15 miles
  • Looking at how to check the mechanical safety of your bike
  • Bike adjustment for most efficient riding position
  • Correct riding position for ascent and descent
  • Braking and weight distribution
  • Route reading
  • Cornering with confidence
  • Control on steep descents

Navigation is a black art for most people: add to the equation speed and a bit of fast down-hill adrenalin and before you know it you’re well and truly lost. Improve your route finding and map skills on one of our mountain bike navigation skills days …

  • Planning a route using maps and guidebooks and with consideration for the weather
  • Introduction to different map scales
  • How to set the map
  • Know how and when to use different navigational strategies – handrails, collecting features, catching features, timing
  • Speed / distance / time considerations
  • Develop an eye for contours, match major landforms like hills and valleys to their map representation
  • Orienting the map to the ground
  • Map symbols

  • How to re-orientate yourself if you do get lost

Essential life saving courses for remote areas. Our two day Outdoor First Aid course is designed for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts with a heavy emphasis on the sorts of injuries and scenarios that you as a mountain biker could face.
